Description

Moto Roader II is a racing game shown in a top-down perspective. Five vehicles compete on a course with the goal to finish first. However, the screen always follows the leading vehicle and if a vehicle is left behind, it gets replaced on the current screen. Every vehicle has a fuel counter which gets a penalty if the vehicle is hit or needs to be replaced. Reaching zero ends the race. Players can choose between three vehicles which drive differently (car, tank or hovercraft) and, if they have gathered enough prize money, can upgrade it between races (including weapons). In contrast to the predecessor, the game has a futuristic look.

Moto Roader II

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1991 by NCS, Moto Roader II is the high-octane sequel to the cult-classic top-down racer on the TurboGrafx-16. While the original game established a solid foundation of vehicular combat and isometric racing, this iteration refines the formula with enhanced track designs, chaotic hazard placements, and a distinctly futuristic, neon-soaked aesthetic. It stands out in the 16-bit library by ditching traditional circuit racing in favor of brutal, demolition-style combat tracks where survival is just as important as crossing the finish line first. Although it never received an official Western localization during its initial run, it remains a beloved hidden gem for retro enthusiasts seeking frantic couch co-op experiences.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loops players into a series of hazardous, top-down vehicular death-races. Unlike standard racers, Moto Roader II equips futuristic cars and bikes with an arsenal of offensive capabilities. Before each race, players can purchase modular upgrades to boost their vehicle's speed, acceleration, armor, and weaponry using cash earned from race placements. The tracks themselves are populated with dynamic obstacles, including landmines, moving barriers, oil slicks, and sudden dead ends that require razor-sharp reflexes. Players can ram opponents into walls, unleash forward-firing projectiles, and drop proximity mines to sabotage the competition. The game supports up to five players simultaneously using a TurboTap adapter, resulting in absolute pandemonium. Winning requires balancing raw driving precision with aggressive combat tactics, as a well-timed missile blast can turn a comfortable lead into a fiery wreck.
