Description

A vertical shoot ’em up with a sci-fi setting that sees brave pilot Kein/Kain Asagiri take on the alien forces that have attacked planet Uranos in his combat hover tank Gigaiasu. The game was initially released on the PC Engine in the January of 1991 and adapted with additional scenes for the Sharp X68000 home computer in the November of that year, where its name was changed to Last Battalion. The goal of the game is to reach the end of each stage, where the player must fight the boss to progress. The game has six stages in total of increasing difficulty.

Override

Overview & History

Released in 1991 by Sunsoft exclusively for the PC Engine in Japan and the TurboGrafx-16 in North America, Override is a visually striking, vertically-scrolling shoot 'em up that drops players into the cockpit of a bio-mechanical fighter ship. Unlike many contemporaries that relied strictly on futuristic sci-fi tropes, Override blended organic alien anatomy with high-tech weaponry, presenting a surreal dystopian universe. The game's backstory details a desperate counter-offensive by humanity against a parasitic hive-mind known as the "Zorg" empire, which has subverted Earth's terraforming mega-computers. Although it flew somewhat under the radar compared to heavyweights like Blazing Lazers, the TurboGrafx-16 port is celebrated today for its blistering pace, vibrant palette, and distinctive techno-organic aesthetic.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard shmup pacing where players collect scattered power-ups on the fly, Override utilizes a strategic upgrade system. Collecting pulsing bio-pods allows players to cycle through an arsenal of devastating armaments between stages, ranging from wide-spread plasma bursts to homing tendril lasers. The defining gameplay mechanic is the titular "Override" gauge, which charges as you destroy enemy formations. Once full, players can unleash a screen-clearing overdrive pulse that vaporizes standard projectiles and deals massive damage to end-level bosses. The game unfolds across six relentless, vertically-scrolling stages, each demanding precise positioning, mastery of the adjustable ship speed, and quick reflexes to dodge dense bullet hell patterns. The organic boss designs—which mutate and shed armor as their health bars deplete—stand as some of the most memorable sprite-work on the 16-bit platform.
