Description

Konami’s imaginative parody on the Gradius series. It plays just like Gradius, with the same power-up system, but features a far more bizarre and imaginative series of levels and characters.
This game was released in Japan for the PC Engine and is a port of the Arcade original with a couple of differences: it doesn’t have the arcade Stages 5 and 8, but features a stage titled SPECIAL and a new introduction that features several strange-looking Japanese characters. This is in contrast to the arcade intro, which chronicles the Gradius legacy up until the time of release.

Parodius Da! Shinwa Kara Owarai e

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1992 for the PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16) CD-ROM format, Parodius Da! Shinwa Kara Owarai e (meaning "It's Parodius! From Myth to Comedy") stands as a masterclass in self-parody. Serving as a whimsical spin-off to Konami's legendary Gradius series, this horizontal scrolling shoot 'em up trades gritty sci-fi tension for surreal, comedic insanity. Originally an arcade hit, the TurboGrafx-16 port boasts vibrant sprite work, enhanced CD audio, and chaotic stage designs featuring giant bouncing Moai statues, dancing showgirls, and neon-lit Japanese bathhouses. The storyline gleefully discards traditional heroic tropes, tasking players with saving the dream world from bizarre cosmic entities using an eccentric roster of absurd vehicles and characters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard shmup titles, Parodius Da! utilizes the iconic Gradius power-up meter, allowing players to collect red power capsules to highlight and select upgrades dynamically. You can choose from four distinct combatants: the iconic ship Vic Viper, the octopus Takosuke, the penguin Pentarou, and the flamboyant bell-ship TwinBee. Each character features uniquely tailored loadouts. For instance, Vic Viper deploys standard double-shots and directional options, while Takosuke utilizes homing missiles and localized barriers. Across seven whimsical stages, players dodge waves of comical enemies and face off against delightfully weird bosses, such as a colossal, crying crying pig airship and a battleship shaped like a traditional Japanese restaurant. Collecting bell power-ups scattered throughout the levels triggers various screen-clearing effects, temporary invincibility, or speed boosts, keeping the fast-paced gameplay endlessly unpredictable and delightfully chaotic.
