Description

Overhead action game. Traverse swamps, canyons, castles and caves armed with your sword that fires upgrade able bolts of energy from its tip. The action also includes a few puzzles and there are some original ideas (like the level where you have to catapult yourself from one place to another).

The PC Engine version of the game sports a big number of differences that almost make it a new game; the stage design has been changed, new stages have been added, the players are given passwords to save their progress, there is a new extra boss battle before the players fight the last boss (Kamuzu), and the ending is completely different from that of the arcade version (however, like many other Namco PC Engine conversions, the graphics and sound are inferior to that of the arcade version due to the fact that it is an 8-bit console).

Valkyrie no Densetsu

Overview & History

Originally developed by Namco as an arcade coin-op in 1989 before receiving its stellar PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16) port in 1990, Valkyrie no Densetsu (The Legend of Valkyrie) is a mythological action-platformer steeped in Norse folklore. The storyline casts players as the golden-haired warrior maiden Valkyrie, tasked by the gods to restore the shattered holy seed of the Yggdrasil tree and save the world from the malevolent demon King Kamus. While Namco's heroine previously appeared in Valkyrie no Bouken, this sequel pivots the franchise into a vibrant, isometric-to-side-scrolling hybrid adventure featuring whimsical sprite art, scaling backgrounds, and an unforgettable fantasy soundtrack by Yoshie Takayanagi.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard run-and-gun platformers of the era, Valkyrie no Densetsu blends exploration, light role-playing elements, and puzzle-solving across sprawling stages. Players guide Valkyrie alongside her lizard-like companion, Sandra (playable in cooperative mode), through diverse environments ranging from lush forests to scorching deserts. Valkyrie attacks primarily with her magical lance, throwing energy projectiles that can be charged for more devastating area-of-effect damage. Throughout the stages, players collect gold coins dropped by defeated mythical beasts to purchase crucial upgrades from wandering merchants. These upgrades include winged boots for double-jumping, extended health meters, and elemental spells—such as lightning strikes and fireballs—that alter combat dynamics against screen-filling bosses. The game masterfully shifts perspectives, occasionally transitioning from platforming action to vertically scrolling shooting sequences where Valkyrie takes flight, keeping the 16-bit pacing perpetually fresh, challenging, and visually arresting.
