This is an enhanced version of 1943: The Battle of Midway, with most of the graphics and sounds reworked. There are also changes in the weapons and the inclusion of anachronical items such as laser-firing WWII planes and ships that run on the ground. The player controls a biplane Boeing Stearman E75 N68828 instead of the P-38.

The PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 adaptation adds some original levels to those from the arcade version, as well as animated intermissions.

Released for the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 in 1991 by Naxat Soft, 1943 Kai: Midway Kaisen is a fascinating vertical-scrolling shoot-'em-up port of Capcom's classic arcade shooter. While the original 1943: The Battle of Midway cast players as American P-38 Lightnings battling the Imperial Japanese Navy, this "Kai" (meaning modified or altered) variant introduces a stylized, futuristic spin on the Pacific theater while tightening the pacing specifically for home console hardware. Unlike its arcade predecessor, this TurboGrafx adaptation scales down the sprite sizes to deliver smoother scrolling and intense bullet-hell patterns, pushing the platform's HuCard medium to its limits with a sweeping, synthesized chiptune soundtrack and visually distinct boss armadas that culminate in massive aerial dreadnoughts and legendary battleships like the Yamato.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard shooters with traditional health meters, 1943 Kai utilizes a unique energy bar that doubles as both your ship's structural integrity and your weapon ammunition. Firing your primary guns or executing special attacks continuously drains this vital meter, forcing a strategic balancing act between aggressive offense and desperate evasion. To survive, players must skillfully master the defensive "Roll" maneuver—executed by pressing the attack and bomb buttons simultaneously—which grants momentary invincibility to phase through dense curtains of enemy flak. Throughout the 24 stages, players can collect POW icons to upgrade weaponry into devastating armaments like the 3-Way Shot, Shell Gun, or the screen-clearing Mega Crash smart bomb. Unique to this home port are hidden secrets, power-up crystals, and tactical energy recharges awarded for obliterating specific enemy formations with pinpoint accuracy.
