Description

This is a remake of the original game. The story still’s the same: Ishtar sends Gilgamesh up the 60 maze levels of the Druaga’s tower to rescue Ki and retrieve the Blue Crystal Rod. He must find each level’s key to proceed to the next one.

Besides the updated graphics, this remake features a 3/4 view instead of the original top-down one. It also bears some RPG elements, as Gilgamesh gathers experience points for killing enemies, which are spent at the end of each level, to improve his stats (such as speed, health, etc.). He’ll also find equipment such as swords, helmets, armors, shields, gauntlets and boots, which can be changed to better his stats, and will also find special items in hidden chests. The way to find theses chests is different for each floor. There are new treasures and new enemies.

The game also features four different difficulty levels (easy, normal, hard and pro), as well as a password feature.

The Tower of Druaga

Overview & History

Originally conceptualized by Toru Iwatani—the visionary behind *Pac-Man*—Namco’s *The Tower of Druaga* is a foundational pillar of the action-RPG genre, serving as a direct inspiration for legendary franchises like *The Legend of Zelda*. While the 1984 arcade original gained mythical status in Japan for its punishingly obscure progression, the game received a stunning resurgence when it was ported to the PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16) in 1990 by Now Production. This console iteration modernized the aesthetic with vibrant 16-bit visuals, remixed audio, and a smoother game engine while retaining the labyrinthine torment of the original.

The storyline plunges players into the role of Gilgamesh, a young, golden-armored knight tasked by the goddess Ishtar to scale a 60-floor demonic citadel. The evil demon Druaga has kidnapped the maiden Ki and shattered the Blue Crystal Rod into pieces, hiding them throughout the tower. To rescue Ki, Gilgamesh must conquer each single-screen floor by defeating the reigning dark forces, unlocking the portal door, and ascending ever higher into the oppressive gloom.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard hack-and-slash titles, *The Tower of Druaga* plays like a real-time puzzle game disguised as a dungeon crawler. Progression is brutally rigid: simply reaching the stairs is impossible without first discovering hidden items on each floor. These items—ranging from protective shields and magic candles to magic potions and pickaxes—are unlocked only by executing hyper-specific, undocumented sequences of actions, such as walking a certain number of steps, killing enemies in a specific order, or blocking fireballs with your shield.

Combat revolves entirely around Gilgamesh’s sword and shield. Holding the action button draws his blade, which is the only way to puncture the defenses of gelatinous slimes, hovering wicks, dark knights, and aggressive dragons. However, Gilgamesh cannot swing his sword continuously; he must pace his attacks. Furthermore, enemy scaling becomes ruthless on higher floors, requiring pixel-perfect positioning and memorization to survive the claustrophobic corridors before the internal level timer expires and summons an invincible ghost.
