Description

Xevious: Fardraut Densetsu, despite sharing its name with Xevious: Fardraut Saga (Fardraut Densetsu in Japanese), can be considered a sequel to that game. The humans’ battle against the bio-computer GAMP continues, with new pilots rising to the challenge and doing their best to protect the Earth.

The game consists of two modes, entitled Arcade and Fardraut. The Arcade mode is the same as the Recon mode in Xevious: Fardraut Saga, being a port of the original arcade Xevious. The Fardraut mode is composed of four stages, featuring familiar South American backgrounds. Unlike most Xevious games, the player takes control of the aircraft Solvalou only in the third stage; the first two ones are played controlling two different, smaller ships, each possessing properties similar to the Solvalou: rapid fire against air enemies, and bombs dropped on ground structures.

Xevious: Fardraut Saga

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1988 for the PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16) by Namco, Xevious: Fardraut Saga is far more than a simple port of the legendary 1982 vertical shooter. It serves as an ambitious, sci-fi continuation of the ancient Garm empire lore, featuring two distinct campaigns. The first mode is "Fardraut," an enhanced remake of the classic arcade formula, while the second mode, "Xevious Episode 2: Guld," acts as a narrative-driven sequel featuring branching paths, atmospheric cutscenes, and an evolving storyline about humanity's battle against the returning alien supercomputer.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard twin-axis shooters, Fardraut Saga retains the signature dual-attack system: the Zapper to obliterate aerial targets like the Bactorian fleet, and the Blaster to drop bombs on stationary ground installations and buried enemy structures. The TurboGrafx-16 hardware allows for crisp, colorful sprite scaling and a faithful recreation of the gritty techno-organic aesthetic. In the "Guld" mode, players can collect item panels to upgrade their ship's weaponry, shield systems, and speed, introducing tactical resource management that was absent in the original arcade release. Boss encounters require precise timing, forcing players to dismantle massive motherships component by component while dodging relentless bullet hell patterns.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Navigate the Solvalou ship across the screen
  • Action Keys: Press I (or configured button) to fire the aerial Zapper, and II to drop the ground-targeting Blaster bomb
  • Enter: Start / Pause the game and access inventory menus
