Overview & History

Originally released in arcades by Sega in 1988 under the title *Altered Beast*, *Juuouki* made its legendary transition to home consoles, receiving a notable NEC TurboGrafx-16 (PC Engine) port in 1990 published by Asmik. The game drops players into ancient Greek mythology as a fallen centurion resurrected by Zeus himself. Your divine mission is to battle through a plague of grotesque undead hordes and reclaim the goddess Demeter from the clutches of the demonic underworld ruler, Neff. Across five distinct, horizontally scrolling stages, the atmosphere is heavy with grim gothic horror, featuring rotting corpses, crawling multi-headed dogs, and fleshy abominations that test your reflexes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling beat-'em-ups, *Juuouki* integrates a unique transformation mechanic. At the start of each level, your hero begins in a frail human state, able only to throw basic punches and high or low kicks. To survive, you must intercept and destroy specific multi-headed white wolves that drop "Spirit Balls." Collecting three of these glowing orbs triggers a visceral, muscle-ripping metamorphosis sequence accompanied by voice samples. Once transformed, your character's moveset and abilities dramatically expand depending on the stage. You evolve into a Werewolf with devastating lightning slashes, a menacing Two-Headed Dragon capable of breathing electrified plasma and floating across gaps, a subterranean Burrowing Bear that unleashes petrifying breath attacks, or a ferocious Tiger that pounces with fiery shockwaves. Each boss battle at the end of a stage requires mastering these beast-specific special attacks to overcome Neff's horrifying shape-shifting forms.
