Toilet Kids

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1990 by Media Rings for the PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16), Toilet Kids stands as one of the most bizarre and surreal vertically-scrolling shoot 'em ups in retro gaming history. The storyline follows a mischievous young boy who, after refusing to clean up or respect his bathroom duties, is inexplicably sucked down into a grotesque, hallucinatory underworld made entirely of plumbing fixtures, sewage, and bodily humor. Developed during an era when Japanese developers frequently experimented with eccentric themes, this cult classic uses scatological imagery to craft a surprisingly fast-paced and challenging arcade shooter that has since achieved legendary status among retro collectors for its sheer audacity and bizarre aesthetic choices.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players pilot a flying, porcelain-throne-inspired craft through five bizarre stages swarming with mutant bugs, sentient rolls of toilet paper, flying plungers, and grotesque toilet-bowl bosses. Unlike traditional mecha or sci-fi shooters, your weaponry relies on bizarre projectile upgrades collected from floating bubbles, ranging from rapid-fire streams of bubbles to devastating explosive plungers. The game introduces vertical scrolling with distinct terrain hazards, forcing precise positioning to avoid both enemy fire and environmental traps. Power-ups alter your ship's speed and firepower, while the vibrant, grotesque pixel art brings a uniquely cartoonish horror to the surreal sewer landscape, complemented by quirky chiptune sound effects.
