Three girls have been reported missing including the mayor’s daughter, and Chase Special Investigations has asked you to track down five vehicles, mentioned in the mission briefing, who are believed to be involved in the kidnapping. Using a heavy-designed machine with a V6 DOHC 3000CC Twin Turbo Engine, five sets of nitro-fuel boosts, and a gun attached to the steering wheel (which you can use to damage the target vehicle), your mission is to patrol the streets and find these vehicles.

The gameplay is similar to Chase H.Q., but there are a few differences. For example, cars travel in both directions instead of one, and some of them will catch up to your car and shoot at you. At least once in every stage a helicopter does a fly by and drops you some grenades you can use to further damage the target vehicle. A guy on a motorcycle will catch up to you and throw grenades at your car. And, most importantly, as mentioned earlier, you can shoot at the target vehicle rather than just bumping into it.

Have fun driving around, but remember, there is a strict time limit, so I wouldn’t waste time or keep crashing into things if I were you.

Released by Taito in 1989 as the direct arcade sequel to the iconic Chase H.Q., S.C.I: Special Criminal Investigation made its way to the TurboGrafx-16 in 1990 courtesy of NEC Avenue. The storyline picks up with undercover agents Brad and Tony—nicknamed the "Special Criminal Investigation" unit—assigned to dismantle a ruthless international drug syndicate operating out of Los Angeles. Unlike its predecessor which focused purely on ramming fleeing vehicles, S.C.I. elevates the vehicular combat stakes by outfitting the player's high-performance Porsche 911 convertible with heavy-duty firepower. The TurboGrafx-16 port captures the breakneck arcade pacing, utilizing the console's HuCard format to deliver rapid-fire scrolling, vibrant metropolitan backdrops, and a pulse-pounding synth soundtrack that perfectly complements the frantic highway shootouts and explosive boss encounters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay shifts between high-speed pursuit and tactical combat. Players navigate the Porsche using an overhead perspective, weaving through civilian traffic, dodging roadside obstacles, and slamming into criminal vehicles to deplete their stamina gauges. The standout mechanic of S.C.I. is the introduction of firearms; while driving at blistering speeds, players can draw and fire an Uzi submachine gun to destroy armed motorcycle outrunners and shoot out the tires of syndicate vans. Periodically, the game transitions into intense boss showdowns where precision shooting and aggressive ramming are required to force armored trucks and heavily modified semi-trailers off the road before a strict countdown timer expires. Extra time extensions are earned by checkpoint milestones, making aggressive, risk-taking driving essential for survival.
