Released exclusively in Japan in 1990 for the PC Engine (later localized for the TurboGrafx-16 library's HuCard format), Zipang is a fascinating strategy-action hybrid developed by Pack-In-Video. Set during Japan's tumultuous Sengoku (Warring States) period, the game departs from typical side-scrolling beat 'em ups by casting the player as a traveling merchant-turned-warrior. The storyline follows a brave protagonist on a quest to unify fractured provinces by trading goods, gathering intelligence, and physically clearing out bandits, rival clans, and mystical yokai infesting the countryside. While it never received a formal Western release during its contemporary era, Zipang has earned a cult following among retro gaming enthusiasts for its ambitious blend of top-down resource management and real-time isometric skirmishes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Zipang splits its gameplay into two distinct phases. First, players manage an economic inventory, buying rice, silk, and weaponry in castle towns while negotiating fluctuating market prices to build up a war chest. Second, players venture into dangerous territory where the perspective shifts to an overhead action-strategy view. Unlike standard hack-and-slash titles, combat requires tactical positioning and stamina management. Players must issue rudimentary commands to hired mercenary troops while defending supply caravans from ambush. Character moves include a standard sword slash, a lunging dash attack to break enemy shield walls, and the ability to drop smoke bombs to escape overwhelming odds. Environmental hazards, such as treacherous mountain passes and sudden weather changes that slow movement, add layers of difficulty to every expedition.
