Description

Energy is a side scrolling platform game by NCS/Masaya. It is based on Ashe, an obscure PC-8801 Japanese game originally released by Quasar Soft in 1988.

A powerful earthquake has released an army of mutant monsters all over the city of Tokyo. A small group of humans survived and from their underground hideout they decide to send a team to investigate and fight the threat. The player takes control of a young fighter with psionic powers (called ‘ESP’), the only known of his kind. He can use these unique phsychic powers to also fire balls of energy, his only means of defense against the various mutants and monsters that crawl around the levels. The player also meets many supportive characters throughout the game that offer clues about the overall story.

Energy

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1989 for the PC Engine (known internationally as the TurboGrafx-16) by Hudson Soft, Energy is a sci-fi action-platformer that stands out for its unique biological aesthetic. Set in the distant future on a colonized planet overtaken by a synthetic mutation known as the "Void Strain," players assume the role of Xenon, an elite bio-engineered operative. Xenon must navigate through five sprawling, biomechanical labyrinth levels—ranging from pulsating vascular tunnels to crystalline server rooms—to purge the rogue central mainframe before the planet's core self-destructs. Though it never received an official western localization, Energy gained a cult following among retro import enthusiasts for its atmospheric soundtrack by composer Keishi Yonao and its gritty, visceral pixel art.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers of the era, Energy revolves around a resource-management mechanic: your health bar is also your ammunition and magic pool. Players must absorb glowing plasma nodes scattered throughout each stage to maintain their 'Energy Index' while dodging biological hazards and robotic sentinels. Xenon’s primary offensive move is the "Plasma Whip," a mid-range melee strike that can latch onto overhead biological vines for fluid swinging mechanics. By holding down the attack button, Xenon can execute a "Cellular Surge," unleashing a screen-clearing energy blast at the cost of a significant portion of his health. Stages are non-linear, requiring players to locate mutated genetic keys to unlock bio-membrane doors, leading to intense, multi-phase boss fights against corrupted biomechanical behemoths.
