Cyber Dodge

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1990 for the NEC TurboGrafx-16 (PC Engine), Cyber Dodge is a cult-classic, fast-paced futuristic action-puzzle game developed by ITL. Set in the neon-drenched year 2099, the storyline follows Rex, a cybernetic courier framed for stealing the central AI core of the Megacity grid. To clear his name and escape the relentless pursuit of the automated security police, Rex must navigate through volatile, grid-based mainframe sectors littered with traps, landmines, and rogue defense drones. While it never received an official Western localization during its original 16-bit heyday, the game has since gained a passionate reputation among retro enthusiasts for its punishing difficulty curve, striking cyberpunk aesthetic, and pulsating chiptune soundtrack.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Cyber Dodge combines top-down puzzle navigation with relentless arcade action across 40 distinct subterranean stages. Players control Rex from a fixed-screen perspective, where the primary objective is to collect all encrypted data drives within a strict time limit while avoiding automated hazards. Unlike traditional platformers, Rex cannot jump; instead, his primary survival mechanic is the "Phase Dash"—a short-range teleport that allows him to pass directly through energy barriers and enemy fire on a strict cooldown. Rex is also equipped with a Plasma Whip, which can be used to temporarily stun approaching sentry bots or push heavy magnetic blocks to crush pursuers. As players progress, environmental hazards evolve from simple floor spikes to shifting laser grids and disappearing platforms, demanding split-second timing and precise spatial memorization to survive.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move Rex in eight directions across the grid
  • Action Keys: Z for Phase Dash / X for Plasma Whip
  • Enter: Start / Pause
