Description

The evil Kubota has kidnapped Dr. Tomari’s fiancee, Kana, and taken the colossal nuclear reactor Ordyne. In order to reclaim them, Dr. Tomari and his assistant Felix take to their battleships and head off in pursuit. Avoid enemies and advance through seven different levels that take place on land, sea, and air. Collect crystals from defeated enemies and use them to buy items or upgrades for your ship at the Space Inn. Do you have what it takes to defeat the boss at the end of each level and ultimately reach Kubota in the final stage, Kubota World?

Ordyne

Overview & History

Originally developed by Namco as an arcade release in 1988 before making its coveted home console debut on the TurboGrafx-16 in 1991, Ordyne is a vibrant, whimsical take on the horizontal scrolling shooter genre. Unlike the grim, sci-fi military aesthetics dominating late-80s shmups, this title injects a heavy dose of manic comedy into its presentation. The storyline follows the brilliant yet eccentric scientist Dr. Tomoyun, whose peaceful laboratory experiments are rudely interrupted by his jealous former rival, Dr. Kubota. Kubota kidnaps Tomoyun’s beloved assistant, Kana, and unleashes an army of bizarre, cartoonish mechanical monstrosities across the skies. Teaming up with the hot-headed pilot Sunday, players must pilot quirky, customized flying machines through six colorful stages to rescue Kana and restore scientific order. The TurboGrafx-16 port faithfully captures the arcade original's bouncy chiptune soundtrack, colorful sprite scaling, and delightfully frantic pacing, making it a distinct cult classic of the 16-bit era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Ordyne departs from traditional shooter tropes by incorporating a shop-and-upgrade economy directly into the stages. As players blast through waves of enemy blimps, robotic animals, and floating contraptions, defeated foes drop gold coins. Periodically, friendly hot-air balloon merchants drift across the screen, allowing players to pull up alongside them and spend their hard-earned currency. The upgrade tree is extensive, featuring devastating weapon power-ups like homing missiles, widespread lasers, and bouncing bombs, alongside defensive shield options and speed boosts that drastically alter Sunday's maneuverability. The controls are snappy and responsive, requiring precise dodging through chaotic bullet hell patterns while managing your offensive loadout. Boss battles at the end of each stage are multi-tiered comedic spectacles, forcing players to learn specific attack intervals and exploit environmental hazards to triumph over Kubota's absurd mechanical creations.
