Description

Some New York City punks have kidnapped a girl. Your girl. Throwing your muscle around is not your normal style, but these are mean streets! If it has to be you versus these big city greaseballs and junkyard dudes — bring them on! They won’t come at your one at a time, so it’s a good thing you can be quick and mean. Go to it, Vigilante! Or never see her smile again.

Vigilante

Overview & History

Released by IREM in 1989 for the TurboGrafx-16, Vigilante serves as the spiritual successor to the legendary arcade beat-'em-up Kung-Master. Set in a gritty, lawless New York City overrun by the vicious 'Skinheads' gang, the storyline follows an unnamed martial arts expert who takes to the asphalted streets after the gang kidnaps his girlfriend, Maria. The TurboGrafx-16 port, handled by Victor Musical Industries, successfully captured the raw arcade atmosphere, bringing harsh urban environments, detailed sprite art, and a memorable heavy-metal-infused soundtrack straight to home consoles. Though it faced stiff competition in the scrolling brawler genre, its unforgiving difficulty and tight combat loop carved out a dedicated cult following among retro gaming enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike contemporary beat-'em-ups that allowed free movement across a vertical plane, Vigilante locks the player onto a strict 2D horizontal axis, focusing entirely on precise timing and positional combat. Players must fend off waves of knife-wielding thugs, chain-swinging punks, and grenade-tossing bosses across five distinct stages, ranging from city streets and metro stations to a final showdown on a moving flatbed truck. The protagonist boasts a versatile martial arts arsenal: standard punches, soaring flying kick maneuvers, and a sweeping low kick designed to trip crouching enemies. When the player accumulates enough damage or picks up a glowing energy icon, the character enters a powerful 'Temporary Rage' state, unleashing rapid-fire punches accompanied by a distinct visual aura. Additionally, players can acquire a heavy steel pipe weapon hidden within crates, drastically increasing offensive reach and damage output at the cost of durability.
