Devil's Crush

Overview & History

Developed by Compile and released in 1990 for the TurboGrafx-16 (and as Devil Crash on the PC Engine in Japan), this dark fantasy pinball masterpiece is the cult-classic sequel to Alien Crush. Eschewing traditional sports themes, Devil's Crush trades chrome and bumper cars for a nightmarish, occult-infused gothic landscape steeped in visceral, demonic imagery. Players face a multi-tiered, vertical pinball board crawling with writhing tentacles, skeletal visages, grotesque floating eyeballs, and sacrificial altars. As a standout title in the TurboGrafx library, it maximized the console's HuCard format and graphical horsepower to deliver blistering speed, scaling sprites, and unforgettable dark art direction.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard pinball sims, Devil's Crush integrates frantic action elements directly into the table. The table spans three distinct interconnected screens: the main playing field, the upper fortress area, and the subterranean boss bonus chambers. As you launch the silver ball, hitting specific trigger targets opens gateways to hidden sub-screens where you actively battle swarming monsters, from giant scorpions to armored knights, using your pinball as a lethal projectile. The controls give you command of standard lower flippers, as well as mid-board and upper flippers to keep the ball in play indefinitely. Nudging the table is crucial to alter trajectories, but excessive tilting results in a dangerous penalty. Power-ups scatter across the board, transforming your ball into a flaming skull or multiplying it into a multi-ball frenzy to maximize score multipliers and defeat the screen-filling, morphing demonic faces that dominate the upper reaches of this macabre pinball playground.
