Description

Final Lap Twin is a hybrid racing/role-playing game released for the PC Engine in 1989 and the TurboGrafx-16 in 1990, as a spin-off to the 1987 arcade game Final Lap. The protagonist is on a quest to live up to the reputation of his racing-champion dad. He travels over the map, meeting small-time racers, and must race his car to earn money that he spends on upgrading his car, eventually facing the local racing champion. After beating the rest of the local racing champions in the various cities, the protagonist must go through a maze to find the final upgrades of the different parts of his car, and then face the world racing champion.

Final Lap Twin

Overview & History

Released by Hudson Soft in 1989 for the PC Engine in Japan and localized in 1990 for the TurboGrafx-16 in North America, Final Lap Twin is a fascinating, highly unorthodox hybrid of a top-down Formula One racing game and a traditional Japanese role-playing game. Set in a futuristic motorsport universe, the storyline follows an ambitious rookie driver who dreams of rising through the ranks to capture the World Championship. Unlike standard arcade racers of the era, the campaign mode (known as "Story Mode") requires players to explore towns, chat with NPCs, purchase vehicle upgrades, and earn prize money by racing rivals on various global tracks. Outside of the sprawling single-player quest, the game features a dedicated "Grand Prix" mode for pure racing action and a "Time Attack" mode to hone your lap times. By fusing vehicular combat and management mechanics with classic turn-based leveling elements, Hudson Soft created a truly unique cult classic that stands apart from standard 16-bit racing titles.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Final Lap Twin splits its core gameplay into two distinct experiences. During Story Mode, you navigate overhead maps on foot, entering shops to buy better tires, engines, and turbo chargers using currency won from races. When you challenge a rival, the perspective shifts into a fast-paced, pseudo-3D rear-view racing segment. Controls require sharp reflexes as you weave past opponents, avoid rough terrain that drains your speed, and strategically deploy your limited supply of turbo boosts. As you win races, your driver earns experience points to improve overall vehicle handling and speed stats. The game also includes a robust password system to save your RPG progress and vehicle specifications. The combination of vehicular tuning, arcade-style drifting, and leveling up gives the game surprising depth, ensuring that success depends as much on smart garage management as it does on raw driving skill.
