Ballistix

Overview & History

Originally conceptualized by Martin Edmondson and Psygnosis, *Ballistix* made its explosive debut on home microcomputers before porting over to NEC’s 16-bit powerhouse, the TurboGrafx-16, in 1991. Ditching traditional sports tropes, this futuristic sci-fi action title acts as a high-octane blend of air hockey, pinball, and demolition derby. Set within a claustrophobic, metallic arena watched over by a digitized crowd, the game challenges players to pilot hover-craft-like units across scrolling, obstacle-laden isometric boards, propelling a heavy metal sphere toward the opponent's goal while dodging landmines, electric barriers, and gravity-altering pits.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core objective of *Ballistix* is aggressively straightforward: score goals against your opponent or the computer AI within a strict time limit. You pilot an agile craft equipped with an invisible magnetic push-and-pull beam used to herd, strike, and shoot the heavy ball across complex, maze-like playing fields. Unlike passive sports games, your craft can also ram directly into rival units to stun them or unleash devastating weapon power-ups collected on the field, including bombs, speed boosts, and directional shields. The TurboGrafx-16 version stands out with its crisp arcade-style graphics, responsive physics, and industrial synthesized soundtrack that amplifies the frantic, sweat-inducing pace of each match.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move and steer your hovercraft across the isometric arena
