Raiden

Overview & History

Originally tearing up arcade floors in 1990 by Seibu Kaihatsu, Raiden found its definitive 16-bit console conversion on the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 in 1991, courtesy of Hudson Soft and NEC Avenue. Eschewing deep narrative in favor of pure, adrenaline-fueled vertical-scrolling shoot-'up action, the storyline thrusts players into the cockpit of the cutting-edge "Raiden" supersonic attack fighter. Humanity faces total annihilation against the V-Lox, an invading mechanized alien armada swarming Earth's skies and continents. As the lone pilot of this experimental prototype, your mission is to cut through eight relentless stages of bio-mechanical terror, neutralizing heavily fortified air fleets, subterranean artillery, and screen-filling boss mechs.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay loop is a masterclass in high-stakes bullet-hell pacing. Players collect power-ups dropped by specialized enemy carriers to upgrade their core arsenal on the fly. The signature red laser carves through targets with concentrated, pinpoint beam damage, while the blue plasma wave offers sweeping crowd-control coverage. Complementing your primary firepower are two distinct secondary ordnance types: the heat-seeking Homing Missiles, which lock onto scattered targets, and the devastating Nuclear Missiles, delivering massive localized explosive yields to clustered ground installations. Panic buttons come in the form of limited-use Bombs (or Smart Bombs), which instantly clear the playfield of incoming projectiles and grant brief invulnerability frames. Unlike its arcade sibling, the TurboGrafx-16 port manages to retain blistering sprite counts, distinct parallax scrolling, and an unforgettable synth-rock soundtrack that punctuates every frantic dogfight without losing a beat.
