Description

Survival is the name of the game in this alien arena!

Never in your wildest dreams did you ever imagine you would be one day riding an ostrich in an alien arena, fighting for your life against other vulture-riding gladiators. And yet, there you are, and your only concern now is survival! Direct your ostrich around the arena and hit your opponents from above to turn them into eggs you can collect for extra points. If they hatch before you can grab them, they will come back into the fight stronger than before. Also watch out for the Pterodactyl who will appear randomly when you least expect it, and avoid the scorching lava pits below. How long can you last in the Joust?

Joust

Overview & History

Ported to the ColecoVision in 1983 by Williams Electronics and published by Coleco, this console iteration brilliantly captures the surreal, medieval arcade phenomenon. Set in a mythical era of floating platforms and fiery chasms, players assume the role of a valiant knight riding a majestic, yet slightly clumsy, flying ostrich. Unlike typical horizontal scouters of the era, the game takes place on single-screen floating stages where momentum is dictated by gravity and repeated frantic flapping. The ColecoVision adaptation is celebrated among retro enthusiasts for packing the frantic, twitch-reflex cooperative and competitive mechanics of the arcade original into home consoles, featuring surprisingly crisp character sprites and iconic chiptune audio that recreates the eerie screech of the Pterodactyl menace.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core objective of *Joust* is to survive escalating waves of enemy knights mounted on giant buzzards. The unique combat mechanic relies entirely on altitude: whoever holds the higher spatial advantage during a collision wins the encounter, destroying the enemy's mount and leaving behind an egg that must be collected before it hatches into a more aggressive rider. If you fly too low or misjudge a descent, the fiery lava pit at the bottom erupts to claim your knight. As waves progress, players must also contend with the invincible Pterodactyl—an unvanquishable beast that stalks high-scoring players—forcing split-second evasive maneuvers across wrap-around screen boundaries.
