Mario Bros.

Overview & History

Released in 1984 by Coleco for their powerhouse eighth-generation console, the ColecoVision port of Nintendo's iconic arcade hit brought the subterranean slugfest of Mario and Luigi to living rooms nationwide. Venturing far beyond the simple single-screen leaping of *Donkey Kong*, this release introduced cooperative two-player plumbing chaos, green-shell physics, and an escalating infestation of Sidesteppers, Fighter Flies, and Slipices. While the ColecoVision version traded some of the vibrant arcade cabinet's color depth for hardware limitations, it achieved technical marvel status by successfully squeezing the frantic multi-platform arcade layout, POW block mechanics, and bonus coin rounds onto a single home cartridge.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The objective in *Mario Bros.* is to clear successive waves of creeping pests from a fixed, multi-tiered sewer system. Unlike later platformers, Mario cannot jump on enemies directly from above; instead, players must run underneath the platforms and punch upward to daze the oncoming creatures. Once an enemy is flipped onto its back, the plumber must rush over and kick it before it recovers and speeds up. The iconic central POW block serves as a panic button, shaking the entire screen and simultaneously flipping every active enemy. Bonus rounds require players to collect coins within a strict time limit, while the infamous "Slipice" enemies coat the platforms in slippery frost, and errant Fireballs bounce unpredictably across the screen to test player reflexes and positioning.
