Orbit
Overview & History
Released in 1983 by Coleco for the ColecoVision console, Orbit is a fascinatingly obscure multidirectional shooter programmed by Brad Stewart. Originally conceived as an adaptation of an arcade concept reminiscent of Atari's Asteroids combined with vector-style combat, the game challenges players to navigate chaotic cosmic environments. Though it never achieved the mainstream commercial saturation of Coleco's arcade ports like Donkey Kong or Zaxxon, Orbit carved out a niche among retro enthusiasts for its physics-based momentum and tense, strategic survival loops.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Unlike standard static-screen shooters, Orbit incorporates realistic gravitational pull and inertia, forcing players to constantly calculate their vessel's vector before thrusting. The objective centers on eliminating aggressively swarming alien spacecraft and hazardous space debris while managing fuel and shields. Players pilot a customizable fighter equipped with a limited-ammo laser cannon and a crucial "Hyperspace" emergency warp button that teleports the ship to a random, potentially safer coordinate on the grid. As waves progress, gravity wells intensify, pulling the ship dangerously close to celestial bodies and adding a high-stakes puzzle element to the high-speed combat.
Keyboard Controls
- Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Rotate ship and apply forward thrust
- Action Keys: Fire laser / Engage Hyperspace warp
