Overview & History

Released by Coleco in 1983, the ColecoVision port of Namco’s coin-op classic Mappy brought the beloved cat-and-mouse arcade caper into living rooms with remarkable graphical fidelity. You step into the paws of Mappy, a dedicated police officer mouse wearing a distinct blue cap, whose singular mission is to infiltrate the sprawling mansion of the notorious feline thief Nyamco (affectionately known as Goro) and recover stolen police goods. The ColecoVision adaptation captured the vibrant, colorful aesthetic of the arcade original, delivering an intense, vertically-scrolling maze-chase experience defined by frantic pacing, trampolines, and thieving felines.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mappy navigates a multi-tiered mansion without a traditional jump button, relying entirely on a network of stretchy trampolines to bounce between platforms. Timing is everything: bouncing too many times consecutively breaks the trampoline, sending Mappy plummeting to his doom. Players must outmaneuver Goro and his sneaky henchmen, the Meowkies, by utilizing flashing microwave doors that release a high-voltage shockwave to blow pursuers across the screen. Additionally, pulling hanging bells drops heavy weights on the cats, temporarily stunning them. The core objective on each stage is to collect all flashing items—such as televisions, radios, and paintings—before the escalating cat patrol corners you.
