Description

Gyruss is a shoot ’em up arcade game. The game was ported from Konami’s 1981 arcade version to ColecoVision by Parker Brothers in 1984.

The gameplay is similar to that of Galaga but presented in a forced 3D perspective, with the player’s ship facing ‘into’ the screen and able to move around the perimeter of an implicit circle. The scrolling starfield of earlier space shooter games is arranged to fit the 3D perspective, with the stars coming into view at the centre of the screen and flying outward, giving the impression of the player’s ship moving through space.

Overview & History

Released by Parker Brothers in 1984, the ColecoVision port of Konami's arcade masterpiece Gyruss brought the dazzling, pseudo-3D tube-shooter experience into the living room. Designed originally by Yoshiki Okamoto, the game departs from traditional fixed shooters by wrapping the player's ship around the perimeter of a circular playfield. The storyline plunges the lone pilot into a perilous deep-space mission to conquer the solar system, starting at Neptune and battling inward toward Earth. Although the ColecoVision hardware lacked the massive color palette of the arcade original, programmer Steve Cartwright delivered a technical triumph that retained the intoxicating momentum, distinctive dual-laser firing mechanics, and Johann Sebastian Bach's synthesized 'Toccata and Fugue in D Minor' soundtrack that defined the arcade sensation.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard vertical shooters, Gyruss features a continuous circular track. Your fighter doesn't just move left and right; it orbits the entire circumference of the screen in a 360-degree cylindrical perspective, creating the illusion of flying down a narrowing cosmic tunnel. Enemies—including swarms of alien craft, exploding satellites, and kamikaze asteroids—appear from the distant center and hurtle outward toward the screen perimeter. The pacing is relentless, punctuated by bonus stages between sectors that test your accuracy against tightly coordinated enemy formations. Surviving requires constant spatial awareness, predicting enemy trajectories as they spiral through the depth plane, and utilizing the dual-shot upgrade that doubles your destructive firepower.
