Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1983 as an arcade title and subsequently ported to the ColecoVision in 1984, Antarctic Adventure is a charming, pseudo-3D scrolling game that stands apart from the typical violent shooters of its era. Players assume the role of an ambitious little tuxedoed penguin named Penta, whose ultimate quest is to race across the frozen, treacherous expanse of the Antarctic continent to reach research stations in various South Pole locations like McMurdo and Showa within a strict time limit. Unlike its MSX predecessor, the ColecoVision version pushed the console's graphic capabilities, offering vibrant blue ice fields, gleaming yellow crevasses, and distinct checkered flags marking progress toward the finish line.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is presented from a third-person, rear-facing perspective, requiring players to constantly dodge obstacles while maintaining momentum. Penta automatically slides forward, leaving footprints in the snow, but must navigate shifting terrain consisting of gaping ice chasms, slippery patches of ice, and territorial fur seals popping up from circular holes. Along the way, players can collect darting fish to boost their score and jump over rocks or plunge into icy water. Falling into a crevasse or colliding with a seal costs precious seconds, causing Penta to pop out of a snowball and resume the race. Between stages, bonus minigames allow Penta to catch leaping fish or soar through the air with a makeshift glider, adding rewarding variety to the race against the clock.
