Description

Aquattack is an action game with four levels which partly have varying gameplay mechanics. In level one and two, the player mans a motor boat which needs to travel a certain distance from left to right. Of course there is a lot of enemy opposition which needs to be avoided. Some enemies can be shot while others are out of reach. Fuel is limited and needs to replenished by collecting refreshments dropped by allied planes. Level three is similar; the player uses a hang glider now. There are different enemies to fight and no fuel to collect. In level four, there is a guarded energy field to cross in order to bring four bombs to the other side. However, only one bomb can be transported at once and there is a time limit.

After beating all four levels, they loop with more difficult enemies and faster playing speed. The player can take nine hits and the overall goal is to earn as many points as possible before the unavoidable final death occurs.

Aquattack

Overview & History

Released in 1983 by Coleco for the ColecoVision console, Aquattack is a lesser-known yet visually striking action title that blends platforming tension with aquatic exploration. Developed during the peak of the golden age of arcade conversions and home console originals, the game tasks players with navigating treacherous waters and subterranean hazards. Unlike standard side-scrollers of its era, Aquattack challenges the player's spatial awareness by alternating between land-based traversal and underwater swimming segments, all while racing against a relentless oxygen and time limit.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The storyline drops the player into the flippers of an intrepid deep-sea explorer navigating a perilous, monster-infested lagoon to retrieve sunken treasure. Gameplay is split into two distinct phases: navigating top-side platforms to reach the water, and diving into the depths. Underwater, your character must dodge aggressive sharks, stinging jellyfish, and deadly electric eels. Movement requires careful momentum management, as the water physics add a floating resistance to every jump and dash. Players can utilize a limited-ammo harpoon gun to neutralize aquatic predators, but ammunition management is crucial for survival. Scoring relies on collecting floating treasure chests while maintaining maximum air reserves before surfacing for oxygen.
