Description

In Centipede, the player is trapped in the Enchanted Forest. Armed with only a magic wand to ward off the forest’s insect denizens, all of which are attacking the player in continuous waves.

The player must use the magic wand to shoot sparks at approaching insects to score points by pressing the controller button. Holding down the controller button will set the wand to rapid-fire shots. If the player is bitten by an insect, the player will be temporarily paralyzed and lose one of the three starting magic wands.

Centipede

Overview & History

Released in 1983 by Coleco for their powerful second-generation home console, the ColecoVision port of Atari's arcade classic Centipede brought the frantic bug-shooting action straight into the living room. Designed to capture the vibrant, colorful aesthetic and addictive arcade tension of the original coin-op, this home conversion stands out due to its remarkably faithful translation of the fast-paced gameplay and distinctive mushroom-grid mechanics.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players assume the role of an unnamed elf trapped in an enchanted garden, tasked with eradicating a descending multi-segmented centipede, venomous spiders, pesky fleas, and erratic scorpions. Unlike many standard vertical shooters, your movement is strictly restricted to the bottom four rows of the screen. As you fire energy zaps upward, every missed shot or destroyed centipede segment sprouts a stationary mushroom. These fungi obstruct both your movement and your projectiles, while also serving as navigational obstacles that force the centipede to drop lower toward your restricted zone. Hitting the middle of a centipede splits it into two independent, writhing threats. The ColecoVision adaptation introduces intense escalating difficulty, requiring swift tactical precision to clear pathways while dodging the unpredictable zigzag patterns of spiders and scorpions that poison mushrooms and accelerate the centipede's descent.
