Description

Choplifter! is a side-scrolling action/arcade game that puts you in command of an attack chopper. Your mission: Go behind enemy lines and rescue up to 16 hostages per level. Be careful, though, because tanks and enemy aircraft will try to stop you – and they won’t stop shooting while you are rescuing those hostages!

Originally released for Apple II home computers, Choplifter! was later ported to the arcades and a number of video game consoles. Many imitators and homages would follow.

Choplifter!

Overview & History

Originally conceptualized by Dan Gorlin and released by Brøderbund in 1982 for the Apple II, Choplifter! made a critically acclaimed leap to the ColecoVision in 1984, courtesy of Coleco's in-house porting team. Distinct from standard side-scrolling shooters of its era, this military rescue simulation tasks players with piloting an experimental prototype helicopter deep behind hostile lines to liberate captured hostages held within high-tech prisoner-of-war camps. While the ColecoVision version inevitably dialed back some of the smooth, high-frame-rate fluidity and multi-layered parallax scrolling of the 16-bit computer originals, it nevertheless delivered a remarkably tight, highly tense arcade experience that pushed the console's Texas Instruments TMS9928A video display processor to render crisp sprite animations, distinct desert palettes, and bustling enemy air traffic. It remains a masterclass in tension, combining resource management with precise spatial navigation.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players assume command of a heavily armed chopper originating from a friendly helipad on the far left side of the map. The core objective is a delicate balancing act of offense and rescue: navigate across barren wasters, bomb opposing tank battalions and ground turrets, and blast open heavily fortified prison buildings to release hostages. Once freed, up to sixteen animated hostages will eagerly run out and board your cargo bay, capping your maximum capacity. You must then carefully ferry these fragile civilian sprites back to the home base while aggressively managing altitude, momentum, and enemy counter-offensives. Every stray tank shell or patrolling jet fighter introduces catastrophic risk—if your chopper takes too much structural damage, or if you accidentally crush escaping hostages beneath your skids, you face swift mission failure. The game demands both ruthless tactical precision and immense patience.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move and tilt the helicopter (Pitch nose forward/backward, ascend, descend)
  • Action Keys: Fire vulcan cannon and drop bombs; hold action alongside directional inputs to tilt and fire independently
  • Enter: Start / Pause the game
