Description

Evolution is an arcade style action game with six levels where you need to evolve from an amoeba to a human. Each level is a different stage in evolution with it’s own unique goals. The first level is the amoeba stage where you need to eat all the DNA on the screen while avoiding the spores, microbes, and antibodies that are trying to stop you. The second level is the tadpole stage. The tadpole needs to eat three flies to move on to the next stage while avoiding the very hungry fish. Next is the rodent stage, where you need to eat five blocks of cheese while avoiding the snakes. In level four you need to guide a beaver across alligator infested waters to retrieve sticks and build a dam. The fifth level is the gorilla stage, where your gorilla has to use coconuts to fight off monkeys that are trying to steel its orange stash. And finally is the human stage, where you have to use a laser gun to fight off mutants that are trying to take over the earth.

Evolution

Overview & History

Released in 1983 by Sydney Development Corporation and published by Coleco for the ColecoVision, Evolution is a uniquely structured biological progression game loosely based on the classic arcade title Bermuda Triangle, mixed with themes of natural selection. Players take control of a mutating organism navigating through five distinct, hostile epochs of Earth’s history—ranging from primordial ooze to a technologically advanced future. As one of the more ambitious third-party titles for the platform, the game stood out for its graphic representation of transmutation, pushing the hardware's color palette and sprite capabilities to simulate shifting ecosystems and bizarre prehistoric hazards.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop requires players to survive hostile environments while collecting genetic building blocks to trigger anatomical transformations. Each stage represents a major evolutionary leap: beginning as a microscopic amoeba, progressing to a swimming reptile, a walking dinosaur, a furry mammal, and finally a bipedal cybernetic creature. Movement and attack capabilities drastically change with every form. As an amoeba, you dodge single-celled predators; as a dinosaur, you sweep the terrain with powerful tail whips and bite attacks; and as the ultimate futuristic entity, you deploy projectile energy blasts to neutralize apex threats. Environmental hazards, ranging from toxic lava flows to gravity anomalies, demand precise timing and spatial awareness. Successfully clearing an epoch rewards the player with a visual sequence of the species mutating into its next higher form, culminating in the ultimate survival victory.
