Description

As a cat burglar, it’s up to you to collect all of the valuable paintings from each level while avoiding security systems, pits and robotic sentries which move back and forth. Each level is comprised of three floors and ladders connecting them. Your cat burglar has only the ability to jump, and you must rely entirely on that to keep you alive.

The Heist

Overview & History

Released in 1984 by Micro Fun exclusively for the ColecoVision—with a later port to the Atari 8-bit family—The Heist is a tense, suspenseful single-screen arcade-style action game that predates the flood of generic platformers. As an elite corporate spy, your sole objective is to infiltrate the heavily guarded headquarters of an international conglomerate, bypass its computerized security grids, crack a heavily fortified wall safe, and escape with top-secret documents before time expires. Unlike many contemporaries that relied heavily on jumping, The Heist focuses heavily on strategic routing, time management, and spatial puzzle-solving, capturing the cold-war espionage paranoia of the mid-1980s through minimalist, high-contrast graphics and a frantic, driving chiptune soundtrack.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay revolves around vertical maze navigation across interconnected office floors linked by stairways and elevators. Players must avoid patrolling security guards and deadly stationary automated defense systems. Your character is equipped with a limited supply of explosive charges, which can be deployed to blast through specific reinforced flooring to trap pursuing guards or open up alternative escape routes. Additionally, you must pick up keycards scattered throughout the cubicles to unlock restricted access zones. Once you reach the top-floor vault, you must rapidly input a memory-sequence combination to crack the safe. Each successful break-in advances you to a more complex layout featuring faster guards, trickier elevator timings, and tighter detonation windows.

Keyboard Controls
