Description

Illusions is a surreal ColecoVision video game in which the player maneuvers blobs around the screen, trying to get them to merge, or, alternatively, split apart. At times, lizards may chase the blobs around. The water bucket, when spilled, can cause the lizard to turn into a fish. If the fish remains there too long, however, it turns into a bird. The game was created by Nice Ideas, a division of Mattel that was located midway between Cannes and Nice.

Illusions

Overview & History

Released in 1984 by Coleco for the ColecoVision, Illusions is a visually inventive and conceptually bizarre platform-puzzle game originally developed by brokerage firm Venture Line. Transporting players into a surreal dreamscape, the storyline follows an eager protagonist navigating shifting architectural puzzles to rescue trapped fairies from malevolent trolls. Pushed late into the ColecoVision's lifecycle, the port brilliantly captured the colorful aesthetic of the original arcade cabinet while leveraging the console's robust graphic capabilities to render fluid, multi-layered isometric environments that challenged players' spatial reasoning and timing.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Illusions departs from standard platformers by introducing dynamic, transforming environments where players manipulate magical mirrors, ladders, and twisting corridors to traverse labyrinthine stages. The gameplay focuses on collecting strategically placed bonus items while dodging surreal enemies like patrolling trolls and flying birds. Character moves are deliberate and precise, requiring players to time their movements across disappearing blocks and utilize teleportation mirrors to instantly shift positions across the screen. Each completed stage increases in complexity, demanding acute memory and split-second spatial calculations to master the shifting optical illusions before the timer expires.
