Description

Jukebox is a musical strategy game that’s kind of a cross between a chess match and a dance contest. During the game the Jukebox is jumpin’ with lots of terrific songs. Songs so good you never want them to stop. But to keep the music playing you’ve got to create gold records. Using your dancing feet and your natural sense of rhythm you jump from square to square creating hit records as you go. Aim for the pulsating gold tiles, because you can build them into records. And the more gold records you get the more coins you earn. Use the coins to keep the music bopping and the game from stopping. Play against the computer or another player.
But plan your strategy carefully, because in Jukebox you can box yourself in – and then the music’s over.

Released in 1984 by Coleco for the ColecoVision console, Jukebox is a rare and unusual rhythm-action hybrid that stood out amidst the era's heavy saturation of sci-fi shooters and platformers. Conceptualized during the height of the MTV music video craze, the game attempted to bring the vibrant energy of a 1950s diner directly into the living room. Due to the impending collapse of the video game market and licensing hurdles regarding the included chiptune pop arrangements, the physical cartridge had a very limited production run, making it a highly coveted prize for retro collectors today. While it lacks a complex narrative storyline, the game frames your musical prowess as a race against an impatient crowd of diner patrons who demand fast service and top-tier retro tunes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around managing a bustling retro diner while simultaneously operating a glowing multi-selection music machine. Players control the teenage protagonist, Frankie, navigating a single-screen top-down perspective of the diner floor. You must dodge erratic, angry customers while collecting falling musical notes and coin tokens. Successfully catching these items allows you to approach the central jukebox to input specific sequence codes that match the patrons' musical requests. Character moves include a standard walking gait, a quick-step dash maneuver to escape closing patrons, and a specialized 'spin-move' that momentarily stuns enemies and clears dropped dishes. Missing too many song requests or letting customers wait too long drains Frankie's patience meter, leading to an instant game over. The challenge escalates as newer, faster patrons enter the diner, requiring lightning-fast reflexes and flawless memorization of note input patterns.
