Description

Jungle Hunt offers four unique adventure experiences, which repeat with greater difficulty once all four have been survived. If you don’t survive these adventures, you will not only lose your own life but that of the lovely Penelope, who has been captured by cannibals!

The first part challenges your Tarzan skills – can you swing on the vines without plummeting to your doom? The second part pits you against a whole bunch of nasty crocodiles in a mighty river. Fortunately, you have a knife to fight back with. Don’t forget to go up for air! In the third part, you face a battle against oncoming boulders of varying sizes and physics. Once you’ve cleared all these treacherous hazards, you still must confront the dreaded cannibal, who is armed with a wicked spear. Can you get past him and save the lovely Penelope?

Gameplay involves much strategic jumping and knife play (in the river/crocodile phase). The view is always a side view, much like Pitfall! and later platform games.

Jungle Hunt

Overview & History

Released by Coleco in 1983, the ColecoVision port of *Jungle Hunt*—originally an arcade hit by Taito known as *Jungle King* before copyright issues forced a character redesign—brought relentless vine-swinging action into family living rooms. Players assume the role of an intrepid 1930s explorer wearing a pith helmet and safari gear, embarking on a daring, multi-stage quest across hazardous African terrains to rescue his captive companion tied to a wooden stake. While bearing visual similarities to Tarzan, this distinct adaptation pushed the ColecoVision hardware to deliver surprisingly smooth scrolling, colorful jungle aesthetics, and memorable chiptune renditions of the "William Tell Overture" that heightened the frantic pacing of every rescue attempt.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is structured as a continuous loop of four distinct, escalating survival trials that test timing, reflexes, and spatial awareness. Stage one requires precise momentum management as our explorer leaps from vine to vine across a sweeping canopy, requiring exact split-second grabs before plummeting into the rocky ravine below. Stage two plunges the hero into a murky river infested with menacing crocodiles and oxygen-depleting depths, where players must either knife the snapping beasts from below or time their surface swims carefully. Stage three shifts the peril to a sloping mountainside where tumbling boulders threaten to crush the adventurer, demanding swift crawling and jumping maneuvers. The final stage culminates in a tense timing puzzle where players must leap past native guards to untie the heroine before the countdown timer expires. Upon completion, the adventure loops back to the beginning with increased speed and difficulty.
