Description

Linking Logic is an educational game meant to improve children’s logical reasoning and planning skills. The aim of the game is to guide one of two children (Buddy or Betty) through the five floors of a building, from the top to the bottom. This is done by flying a bird who can place various objects (bridges, springs, walls and ladders) along the path. These are needed to prevent the child from falling through holes or changing its direction. Once the objects have been placed the game can be started and the child will start walking. As they walk a button has to be pressed as they pass patterned tiles. Those tiles will then be placed in spaces on the bottom floor. If a tile is missing when the child reaches the bottom floor the game is lost.

Linking Logic

Overview & History

Released in 1984 by Coleco for the ColecoVision, Linking Logic is a cerebral puzzle-strategy title that tested the limits of the console's TMS9918A graphic capabilities by focusing on grid-based spatial reasoning rather than traditional arcade action. Conceived as an adaptation of European wire-routing logic puzzles, the game challenges players to step into the role of an apprentice cyber-technician navigating the mainframe of a malfunctioning supercomputer known as "The Nexus." The storyline tasks you with manually rerouting volatile data streams across increasingly complex circuit boards before core memory suffers a total system wipe. Despite arriving late in the ColecoVision's commercial lifespan, it developed a cult following among puzzle enthusiasts who appreciated its deliberate pacing, stark industrial aesthetic, and the rigorous mental strain required to conquer its later levels.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Linking Logic unfolds across a multi-tiered grid representing different sub-circuits of the mainframe. The primary objective is to connect matching colored terminal nodes by placing, rotating, and swapping modular pipeline tiles before a countdown timer expires. The protagonist, a floating cursor-droid named "Bit," has limited mobility and must physically traverse the grid to manipulate tiles, avoiding rogue memory leaks and static glitches that constantly threaten to short-circuit completed pathways. As players progress, mechanics evolve to introduce directional logic gates, one-way valves, and volatile quantum nodes that detonate if bridged improperly. Success relies on anticipating multi-step routing consequences, managing limited tile inventories, and optimizing path efficiency to achieve high-score multipliers.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move Bit across the grid nodes
  • Action Keys: Pick up, rotate, or place pipeline tiles
  • Enter: Start / Pause
