Description

In Moonsweeper your goal is to rescue miners from the moons in Star Quadrant Jupiter. You begin your mission in space where you must avoid deadly aurora flares, photon torches and space bullets from the sun in this quadrant. From time to time you will see a moon pass by, and by flying near it you can descend to the surface. As you sweep along the surface, you will see stranded miners which need to be rescued by flying over them. Also on the moons surface are various obstacles which must be avoided or destroyed, such as towers and lunar satellites as well as alien surface destroyers. Should you survive and rescue six miners (the maximum your ship can carry), then you may take off from the surface by using the accelerator rings. There are several different types of moons found in this quadrant, each with a different level of difficulty. To help out, your ship is equipped with photon torpedoes and shields (though you will lose points while using the shield).

Overview & History

Released by Imagic in 1983 for the ColecoVision, Moonsweeper is a sci-fi action shooter that pushes the hardware capabilities of the console with its ambitious dual-perspective gameplay and crisp, vibrant graphics. Originally designed by Brad Stewart, the game casts the player as the pilot of an advanced scout ship tasked with a daring planetary rescue mission. Stranded colonists are scattered across hostile, cratered moons, and it is up to you to navigate treacherous orbital hazards, land your craft amidst treacherous terrain, and airlift the survivors to safety before time runs out. While it also saw ports to other 8-bit systems, the ColecoVision iteration remains a standout for its smooth scrolling, distinct color palette, and multi-phase progression loop that separates it from standard single-screen shooters of the era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Moonsweeper is divided into two distinct gameplay phases that alternate seamlessly. The journey begins in deep space, where your ship must blast through a relentless onslaught of alien fighters and floating space debris while managing a precious fuel supply. Once you survive the orbital gauntlet, the perspective shifts dramatically into a vertical-scrolling descent onto the moon's jagged surface. Here, you must carefully maneuver your ship to land on designated rescue pads, deploying a tractor beam to retrieve the stranded miners. The mechanics require a delicate balance of aggressive offensive firing and precise thruster control, as crashing into the lunar landscape or running out of fuel means instant destruction. As you clear each moon, the difficulty ramps up with heavier alien resistance and narrower landing zones.

Keyboard Controls
