Description

You control a strange green blob of a creature with a long trunk sticking out the front, moving it around in a one-screen, non-scrolling, open cave. In every level, your goal is to eat ten floating seeds. Meanwhile, of course, the game does its best to prevent you from doing so, by throwing a multitude of different monsters against you. Fortunately nearly every monster in the game can be eaten as well. If an enemy touches Slurpy, you can kiss one of your precious lives goodbye; but woe to the enemy that strays in front of Slurpy’s trunk and is caught by his amazing suction power!

Overview & History

Released in 1983 by Century Electronics for the ColecoVision, Slurpy stands as a quirky and colorful maze-action arcade adaptation that capitalized on the post-Pac-Man craze. While it never achieved the household-name status of Coleco's biggest first-party ports, it carved out a dedicated cult following due to its bizarre premise: players control a stretchy, amphibious chameleon-like creature navigating increasingly hazardous, geometric labyrinth boards. The objective is to consume all the wandering insect pests while dodging predatory botanical hazards and hostile maze guardians. Its vibrant palette and fast-paced, reflex-heavy gameplay made it a fascinating, albeit overlooked, technical showcase for the ColecoVision's robust graphic capabilities, pushing sprites across labyrinthine tracks with minimal flicker.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard dot-munching clones, Slurpy introduces a unique extension mechanic. Your character cannot simply walk into enemies; instead, you must utilize a signature darting tongue attack to reel in targets from a distance. The maze layouts are peppered with tight corridors and warp tunnels, forcing players to carefully time their lunges. As you advance through the stages, the pests become more aggressive, and environmental hazards like snapping Venus flytraps begin to block vital escape routes. Clearing a screen requires a delicate balance of spatial awareness, quick tongue-snapping accuracy, and strategic use of temporary speed power-ups scattered across the grid.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Navigate the labyrinth corridors and position your character
  • Action Keys: Shoot/extend your tongue to catch insect pests
  • Enter: Start the game / Pause the action
