Dropping aliens on top of other aliens earns you extra points and eliminates both. Levels get progressively harder and enemies grow faster.

Overview & History

Released by Coleco in 1982 for the ColecoVision console, Space Panic is a home port of Universal's arcade trailblazer that actually predates Nintendo's Donkey Kong in establishing the vertical platform-climber genre. While not based on a licensed sci-fi blockbuster, the game casts you as a beleaguered astronaut named Ramsay stranded on a hostile alien planet infested with relentless, balloon-headed extraterrestrials known as Spacoids. Tasked with clearing multiple subterranean labyrinth levels before your oxygen meter fully depletes, Ramsay must rely entirely on his wits, a trusty oxygen-powered hammer, and structural ingenuity rather than laser blasters or conventional weaponry. The ColecoVision adaptation was widely praised upon release for retaining the challenging, claustrophobic atmosphere and vibrant sprite aesthetics of the arcade original, making it a distinct historical milestone in early console gaming libraries.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard shooters of its era, Space Panic forces players to adopt a defensive, puzzle-like strategy across multi-tiered scaffolding connected by ladders. Armed only with a T-shaped digging tool, Ramsay cannot destroy monsters directly. Instead, players must use the hammer to drill holes into the wooden flooring above a pursuing Spacoid, lure the alien into falling through the cavity, and then strike the trapped creature two more times to knock it down to a lower level—or completely through the bottom of the screen for an instant elimination. Successfully dealing with tougher, multi-hit monsters requires luring them through multiple stacked floors simultaneously. With a countdown timer represented by a diminishing oxygen gauge, players must expertly balance cautious excavation with rapid ladder navigation to conquer the increasingly complex alien swarms.
