Description

Tutankham is an arcade action game played from a top down point of view. You are an explorer in King Tut’s tomb on a mission to retrieve as many of the valuable treasures as you can find. In addition to the treasures, you will also find a key in each of the chambers. This is needed in order to unlock the entrance to the next, more difficult chamber. Be careful, for the tomb is guarded by many dangerous creatures! Cobras, bats, scorpions, and more all appear in the maze and will cause you to lose a life if you’re caught! To defend yourself you are armed with a laser gun which you can fire left or right, but not up or down. In each of the mazes you are also give one “flash” which can be used to destroy all creatures currently on the screen.

Tutankham

Overview & History

Released by Coleco in 1983, Tutankham for the ColecoVision is a masterful port of Konami's classic 1982 arcade labyrinth shooter. Taking inspiration from the global fascination with King Tutankhamun's tomb discovery, the game drops players into the suffocating, jewel-encrusted corridors of a perilous Egyptian pyramid. While the original arcade hardware featured a vertical monitor and distinctive dual-stick controls, the ColecoVision adaptation cleverly re-engineered the experience for home consoles, capturing the tense, claustrophobic atmosphere of tomb raiding. Players control an intrepid explorer on a quest to loot ancient treasures across multiple sprawling mazes, culminating in the ultimate prize: the Golden Pharaoh. Despite the limitations of early-80s home hardware, this version delivers crisp sprite work, colorful maze layouts, and an unrelenting difficulty curve that challenged the dexterity of arcade enthusiasts on their living room televisions.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Tutankham breaks away from standard static-screen shooters by forcing players to navigate horizontally and vertically scrolling, pitch-black mazes using a limited-range flashlight beam. Your explorer is armed with a laser gun to blast hostile desert fauna, including aggressive bats, scorpions, and cobras that swarm the corridors. Each level introduces unique hazards, requiring careful timing to bypass laser-barrier gates that open and close rhythmically. If you get hopelessly lost or overwhelmed by the swarming enemies, a one-use "Flash Bomb" can be triggered to instantly wipe every hostile creature off the screen—though it must be conserved for absolute emergencies. A ticking onscreen timer adds constant pressure, forcing players to balance thorough treasure hunting with frantic navigation. Should you find yourself trapped with no escape, a panic warp key transports you back to safety at the cost of precious points, making survival a meticulous balancing act of speed, strategy, and reflexes.
