Description

As superhero Adam Power, you’re the pilot of a space sled on patrol around the explosive Volcan Rock, and what better cover for the bad guys? An enormous laser-eyed space serpent is coiled around the mountain, and you have to take it down single-handedly. Once See the videoyou’ve baked the snake, you land your sled on the surface and have a shootout with Gryptogg, Raygoth and Arkus. Once you’ve beaten them back, you can explore the underground caverns, collecting their instruments of evil and exchanging fire with them again. When you escape from their maze, you advance to the next level and begin the fight anew. (North American Philips / Probe 2000, 1983 – unreleased)

This Colecovision adaptation of the Odyssey2 game (now there’s a phrase you’re never going to see again), where the player has arrived at Vulcan Rock, an artificial planetoid defended by a laser-eyed space serpent and other minions of the evil Extra-Terrestrial Alliance. Now he must defend himself from them, as well as the volcano itself.

Overview & History

Released in 1983 by Coleco for the ColecoVision, Power Lords: Quest for Volcan was designed to capitalize on the sci-fi action figure toy line created by Revell. The game puts players in the shoes of Adam Power, the valiant champion of the universe, who must harness the energy of the Power Sword to stop the tyrannical tyrant Volcan and his evil alien minions from conquering the galaxy. Despite the toy line's niche popularity, the ColecoVision adaptation offered an ambitious blend of multi-tiered platforming and strategic combat, pushing the hardware's graphical capabilities with detailed sprite work and colorful alien landscapes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Power Lords is divided into distinct operational phases that test both spatial awareness and reflexes. In the main platforming segments, Adam Power must navigate treacherous terrain filled with lava pits, shifting platforms, and hostile mutants. Players can transform Adam into his ultimate Power Lord state, temporarily granting invulnerability and devastating projectile attacks to obliterate bosses guarding sector exits. The game incorporates a vertical climbing mechanic where precision jumping and timing are vital to avoid instant-death hazards. Collecting hidden energy crystals scattered throughout Volcan’s subterranean stronghold increases your score and refills your health meter, which constantly depletes under the harsh alien atmosphere.
