Description

In this game you control a chicken who must run around the farm collecting her eggs and putting them back in the coop. Trying to stop you are various predators such as snakes, birds and a cunning fox. You also have to be careful not to smash the eggs as you push them back to safety. If you take too long the eggs hatch into chicks and these little death merchants are much more difficult to catch! Once you collect all the eggs/chicks it’s game over.

Released late in the ColecoVision's commercial lifespan by an adventurous indie developer pushing the hardware to its limits, The Yolk's on You is a bizarre, highly coveted cartridge classic. The storyline casts players as Benedict, a sentient, anthropomorphic hard-boiled egg on a desperate quest to rescue his kidnapped fiancée, Sunny-Side, from the diabolical clutches of the rogue culinary mastermind, Chef Scrambler. Blending frantic platforming with fast-paced puzzle elements, the game stands out in the ColecoVision library for its surreal humor, vibrant color palette, and surprisingly deep narrative told through whimsical 8-bit cutscenes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay unfolds across five distinct kitchen-themed worlds, ranging from the blazing depths of the Deep-Fryer Dungeons to the treacherous conveyor belts of the Packaging Plant. Benedict must navigate vertical environments while avoiding obstacles like rolling meat-tenderizers and boiling oil pits. Unlike standard platforming heroes, Benedict's primary offensive move is the "Shell Shock," allowing him to crack his outer casing to unleash a localized kinetic blast that stuns approaching enemies, such as rogue spatula bots and mutant whisk-wasps. Players must manage Benedict's fragility meter; taking too many hits causes him to crumble, losing precious lives. Scattered throughout each level are precious golden eggcups and seasoning packets that grant temporary invulnerability and high-score multipliers. Precise timing is mandatory, as platform edges are slick and inertia plays a heavy factor in Benedict's momentum.
