Description

This must be the most dangerous job in the west!

You’ve recently been recruited as the town’s newest sheriff, but that shiny new badge of yours does nothing to scare away the crooks. !
The local bank is often the target of surprise bank robberies.
Now you’ve decided to take the bull by the horns and stand guard as the bank’s self-appointed security officer,
to shoot the robbers as soon as they show their ugly faces.

But be careful! Shoot a regular customer, get shot by a robber, or allow bombs to go off and you’ll be out of a job faster than you can say “skedaddle.” !

Bank Panic

Overview & History

Released by Coleco in 1984, Bank Panic for the ColecoVision is a frantic, first-person arcade conversion originally developed by Sega. Set in the Wild West town of Eastbourne, your unnamed protagonist is a vigilant sheriff tasked with safeguarding the local bank from an influx of rowdy outlaws and crafty bank robbers disguised as harmless citizens. The ColecoVision port successfully captured the frantic atmosphere, colorful graphics, and tension of the coin-op original, delivering a unique multi-screen perspective rarely seen on home consoles of the era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling shooters, Bank Panic utilizes a rotating, panoramic perspective. The screen displays a semicircular wall featuring twelve numbered vault doors. Customers—ranging from innocent townspeople and weeping maidens to heavily armed bandits and bomb-toting villains—briefly pop out from behind these doors. Players must rapidly scan left and right, peering into each doorway as it opens. If an innocent person appears, you must hold your fire to earn cash deposits; if a masked criminal flashes a gun, you must draw and shoot instantly before they open fire on you. Bags of money, extra time bonuses, and sneaky characters trying to sneak in via the chimney add layers of strategic urgency. As stages progress, doors open faster, and clever outlaws employ disguises, demanding lightning-fast reflexes and sharp memorization.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Rotate left and right between the 12 vault doors
  • Action Keys: Draw and fire your six-shooter
  • Enter: Start / Pause the game
