Description

The Final Star is our last hope against planet Gordess!

In the year 2010 of the Dimensional Almanac, a mysterious rogue planet appeared in the darkness of the cosmos. It was named Gordess, and its war-driven inhabitants plundered the resources of every planet they encountered, and left nothing but death in their wake. Fighting the Gordess seemed impossible, and yet, against all odds, a brave soldier riding a space patroller challenged the alien army. People called this space patroller the Final Star, and hoped it would save them from impending doom. The Gordess has been commiting mass murder for the last 2000 years. As the pilot of Final Star, can you put a stop to it?

Star Force

Overview & History

Released by Telegames in 1983, Star Force for the ColecoVision is a masterful home port of Tecmo's classic vertical-scrolling arcade shooter. Tasked with liberating the galaxy from the malevolent Gordian empire and their bio-mechanical supercomputer, Goara, you pilot the advanced 'Final Star' fighter craft. While the arcade original was celebrated for its smooth performance and complex point-multiplier routing, the ColecoVision iteration stands out as one of the console's most graphically impressive conversions, squeezing surprising detail, colorful enemy sprites, and an atmospheric, driving chiptune soundtrack out of the vintage hardware.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrollers, Star Force features a relentless vertical perspective that scrolls automatically over a series of diverse alien planets, ranging from organic, pulsating landscapes to metallic dreadnought surfaces. The core gameplay loop revolves around a dual-threat environment: you must constantly blast airborne alien squadrons while simultaneously dropping bombs onto ground-based installations and turret emplacements. Destroying specific patterns of ground targets reveals flashing power-up symbols ('S'), which upgrade your ship's firepower, increasing your bullet spread and devastating boss units. Unlike many of its contemporaries, the game famously features no traditional life system or checkpoints; instead, you rely purely on a generous pool of replacement lives, and death instantly respawns you right where you fell to keep the adrenaline-fueled pacing unbroken.
