Overview & History

Released in 1987 by Activision, the ColecoVision port of Escape's arcade hit Wonder Boy brings the colorful prehistoric platforming adventures of Tom-Tom directly to classic hardware. While the system was technically past its commercial prime by the late 80s, this conversion retains the vibrant atmosphere, relentless difficulty, and core charm of the original coin-op. Players guide the young caveman hero through hostile prehistoric jungles, caves, and ice realms on a perilous quest to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend, Tanya, from the clutches of the evil king.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay revolves around fast-paced momentum and a punishing, constantly draining vitality meter represented by a row of rapidly depleting hearts. To keep Tom-Tom alive, players must frantically collect scattered pieces of fruit and meat while avoiding hostile forest creatures, rolling boulders, and primitive traps. Scattered throughout the scrolling stages are hidden eggs containing helpful power-ups, such as skateboards for high-speed traversal, fairy companions for temporary invulnerability, and axes that serve as the hero's primary projectile weapon. Tom-Tom can throw these stone hatchets forward to dispatch enemies from a safe distance, but he must rely on precise jumping mechanics to clear lethal hazards and bottomless pits across seven distinct worlds, each broken down into four tense rounds.
