Description

Only Golgo 13 can free the hostages onboard the runaway trains!

As Japan’s best professional hit-man, code-named Golgo 13, you’ve been hired by local authorities, as a last resort, to free a group of passengers held captive onboard a number of runaway trains. In this emergency situation, there’s only one way you can carry out your contract: You must drive your car alongside each train, and use your M-16 rifle to break the train’s windows, in order to let the hostages escape. However, not only must you contend with incoming traffic of trains and cars that block your line of fire, you must also watch out for hostile helicopters bent on stopping you dead in your tracks. This is certainly one of Golgo 13’s toughest missions!

Golgo 13

Overview & History

Released in 1984 by Vic Tokai in Japan and subsequently slated for Western markets, the ColecoVision iteration of Golgo 13 translates the legendary, stoic hitman Duke Togo into an ambitious 8-bit espionage thriller. Based on Takao Saito’s enduring manga, this adaptation tasks the unflinching assassin with infiltrating a heavily guarded island fortress belonging to the villainous Vratislav syndicate. Unlike standard run-and-gun platformers of the era, this title attempts a multifaceted genre-hybrid approach, forcing players to alternate between stealthy indoor infiltration, vehicular combat, and precision sniping sequences. While Coleco's hardware was sunsetted shortly after launch, making this cartridge a relatively scarce and sought-after piece of retro hardware history, it remains a fascinating early example of adapting mature seinen manga tropes into interactive entertainment.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay structure is divided into distinct operational phases. The mission begins on the perilous waters surrounding the enemy base, where players pilot a patrol boat, dodging hostile torpedoes and rival vessels while returning fire. Successfully breaching the perimeter transitions the game into side-scrolling infiltration segments inside the fortress. Here, Duke Togo must carefully navigate multi-tiered corridors, bypass automated security drones, and neutralize patrolling guards. Character movement relies on a combination of precision footing and contextual combat maneuvers. Duke can walk, duck, and deploy his signature silenced silver Colt M1911 pistol to eliminate threats. Ammunition management is critical, as failing to scavenge or ration bullets leaves the world's greatest sniper defenseless. The ultimate objective of each loop culminates in a first-person sniping minigame. Players must compensate for wind direction, target movement, and heart rate to deliver a fatal, single-bullet execution from a distance. Featuring tight countdown timers and punishing enemy damage thresholds, Golgo 13 demands memorization, sharp reflexes, and tactical patience from the player.
