Astrododge

Overview & History

Released by Pixel Boy and Team Pixel Boy in 2011 as a homebrew release for the classic 1982 ColecoVision console, Astrododge breathes new life into retro hardware by combining the frantic dodging action of arcade classics with modern homebrew polish. Originally envisioned as a conceptual tribute to early single-screen avoidance games, the cartridge offers ColecoVision enthusiasts a rare, physically manufactured collector's item complete with a box and manual. The storyline drops players into the hazardous debris fields of the outer rim, where a lone pilot's navigational computer has catastrophically failed amidst a relentless asteroid shower. Tasked with sheer survival, your mission is to deftly maneuver your compact starfighter through wave after wave of tumbling space rocks, alien projectiles, and spatial anomalies. Utilizing the ColecoVision's unique numeric keypad and hand controllers, this homebrew gem pushes the console's TMS9928A video display processor to handle multiple fast-moving sprites simultaneously, avoiding the severe flicker that plagued lesser software of its era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Astrododge centers entirely around spatial awareness and reflex-driven survival across claustrophobic, single-screen arenas. Unlike traditional shooters where you actively hunt down enemies, your primary objective here is evasion. The screen populates with asteroids of varying sizes that bounce dynamically off the perimeter walls, splitting into smaller, faster fragments whenever struck or when a designated timer expires. Players must collect intermittent power-ups—such as temporary invulnerability shields, localized time-freezers, and score multipliers—while avoiding fatal collisions with cosmic hazards. As you clear consecutive rounds, the velocity of the debris increases exponentially, introducing homing missiles and stationary space mines that drastically restrict your safe zones. The game features an escalating difficulty curve, vibrant custom color palettes that push past standard ColecoVision limitations, and a high-score tracking system designed to challenge retro score-chasers.
