Peek-a-boo

Overview & History

Released in 1984 during the twilight of the ColecoVision's commercial peak, *Peek-a-boo* is a fascinatingly obscure title developed by Bit Corporation and published by Coleco. While many ColecoVision ports focused on arcade action, this domestic release leaned into a whimsical, labyrinthine aesthetic reminiscent of early European computer puzzle games. The narrative follows a cheeky, mischievous sprite named Pip who must navigate a series of multi-tiered, shadowy domestic environments to recover stolen heirlooms before dawn. Because of its late-era release window, physical cartridges remain remarkably rare among collectors, cementing its status as a hidden gem of the console's library.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around a dynamic line-of-sight and concealment mechanic. Unlike standard platformers, *Peek-a-boo* challenges players to exploit shifting shadows and architectural alcoves to evade patrolling mechanical guards and whimsical clockwork monsters. Pip's primary ability is the eponymous "Peek-a-boo" stance, which compresses his sprite into a stationary hiding pose, rendering him completely invisible to enemies passing through direct light cones. Success requires mastering timing and spatial memory, as players must collect glowing keys scattered across vertically scrolling rooms while managing a rapidly depleting stealth meter. Failing to break line-of-sight in time results in an immediate life loss, sending Pip back to the start of the maze.
