War

Overview & History

Released in 1983 by Coleco for the ColecoVision console, War is an obscure and fascinating artifact of early home console strategy. Originally envisioned as a licensed adaptation of a tabletop wargame, the project underwent significant shifts during development due to licensing constraints and the hardware limitations of the Zilog Z80-powered console. Coleco ultimately pivoted the title into a tense, tactical clash of armored combat and territorial dominance. While it never achieved the ubiquitous arcade fame of platformers from that era, War carved out a niche among dedicated early console strategists who appreciated its calculated pacing and stark divergence from the standard joystick-wobbling shooters of the early 1980s.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

War places players in command of advanced military divisions across a grid-based theater of operations. The core gameplay loop focuses on resource management, strategic positioning, and outflanking opposing units. Players must deploy tanks, infantry, and support artillery across diverse terrain types—ranging from rugged mountains to passable plains—each affecting movement speed and defensive cover. Unlike twitch-based arcade games, victory in War demands patience and foresight, requiring commanders to anticipate enemy maneuvers, protect supply lines, and execute coordinated assaults to neutralize enemy strongholds before time expires or resources are depleted.
