Description

You’re Sandy Olson, a young and beautiful traffic policewoman in charge of helping hundreds of drivers face the unavoidable traffic jam caused by summer roadworks. One of those drivers is Danny Zucku, an executive who works for a very important company. He has been your friend for some time, but now you feel you want to be something more than only his friend. So you make an extra effort to help him get to his job on time, by moving the cars and trucks around the area to clear a path for Danny’s sportscar. As the days pass, the traffic jams get worse, and helping Danny becomes quite a challenging puzzle for you. If Danny cannot escape the morning traffic, he may get fired!

Released in 1983 by Zimag for the ColecoVision, *Traffic Jam* is a rare and distinct puzzle-action hybrid that tasks players with bringing order to a chaotic metropolitan gridlock. While many third-party ColecoVision titles of the era were standard arcade ports, Zimag crafted an original concept combining strategic traffic management with frantic arcade pacing. The game challenges players to step into the shiny shoes of Officer O'Malley, a harried urban traffic cop whose sole responsibility is preventing gridlock disaster at the city's most volatile four-way intersection.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players navigate the grid-based intersection from a top-down perspective, controlling Officer O'Malley as he dashes across asphalt to manually alter malfunctioning traffic lights, tow stalled jalopies, and ticket reckless speeders darting across the screen from unexpected angles. The core mechanic revolves around timing and spatial management; letting too many cars idle triggers a massive sonic boom of honking horns and a game-ending traffic pileup. Power-ups occasionally drop, granting O'Malley temporary speed boosts or the ability to freeze time for passing sedans and delivery trucks. As the levels progress, emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire trucks demand immediate priority, adding layers of high-stakes panic to the urban chaos.
