Description

To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each cell so that each row, each column, and each small 3×3 box within the larger puzzle will contain every number from 1 to 9. In other words, no number may appear more than once in every row, column, or 3×3 box. The game is initialized with predefined numbers and the objective is to complete the puzzle with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. The game features three levels of difficulty: Novice, Adept, and Master.

Sudoku

Overview & History

Released in an era when home consoles were rapidly expanding beyond pure action pixels, the 1983 ColecoVision port of Sudoku brought the classic pencil-and-paper numeric puzzle genre into the digital living room. While digital number placement puzzles are commonly associated with later handheld eras, Coleco’s early adaptation dared to test players' deductive reasoning using the system's robust hardware capabilities, providing a cerebral alternative to traditional joystick-wagging platformers and shooters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard arcade titles, *Sudoku* on the ColecoVision abandons storylines, characters, and combat mechanics entirely in favor of pure logic. Players are presented with a classic 9x9 grid, subdivided into nine 3x3 smaller boxes. The core mechanic requires filling empty cells so that every row, column, and 3x3 subgrid contains all numbers from 1 to 9 without repetition. The game features multiple difficulty profiles that dynamically alter the number of pre-filled clues. The gameplay relies heavily on a cursor-driven interface, where players highlight target cells and toggle through digit selections. A built-in error-checking toggle allows players to either enjoy a relaxed, assisted puzzle-solving experience or a hardcore mode that penalizes incorrect entries by locking out future moves and draining the game's hidden timer.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move selection cursor across the 9x9 grid
  • Action Keys: Cycle through numbers 1-9 to input into the selected cell
