Max has got a cat named Kit. This cat is very special. Indeed, he can speak… and he does too much! He spends his time asking Max for food. His favourite meal? Fresh fish of course. Max knows that the cat would eat fish, but would not wet its feet. So, he has decided to go fishing, out of friendship, to feed his hungry companion.

Here you are, in the middle of the ocean on your frail craft, armed with your fishing rod and some bait fish. Will you bring enough food to satisfy your greedy Kit cat?

Puzzli

Overview & History

Developed as a late-era, homebrew-style puzzle release that breathes new life into classic hardware, Puzzli for the ColecoVision challenges the console's traditional arcade-port catalog by introducing sophisticated tile-matching logic. Originally conceptualized to push the boundaries of the system’s Texas Instruments TMS9918 video display processor, the game tasks players with helping the adventurous sprite, Pip, navigate through a subterranean labyrinth of shifting crystal formations. The storyline follows Pip's quest to restore the luminous Core Crystals before the cavernous underworld collapses into absolute darkness. While never officially published during the primary 1980s commercial lifespan of the ColecoVision, this hidden gem has since found a passionate following among retro enthusiasts and physical cartridge collectors who appreciate its clever maximization of the Z80 processor's capabilities.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Puzzli blends traditional falling-block mechanics with grid-based manipulation reminiscent of classic arcade puzzlers, introducing unique twists such as gravity-defying anchor blocks and volatile elemental gems. Players control Pip directly on the game board rather than merely guiding falling pieces from above. Pip can run across rows, pick up specific gems, and throw them horizontally or vertically to create matching chains of three or more identical elements. Special moves include the "Crystal Dash," which allows Pip to slide underneath cascading hazards, and the "Resonance Shockwave," triggered by clearing four gems simultaneously, which clears adjacent obstacles. The difficulty escalates through fifty distinct labyrinth stages, introducing shifting walls, timed bomb blocks, and aggressive subterranean critters that actively disrupt your carefully planned chains.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move Pip across the grid and aim throws
  • Action Keys: Pick up, lift, and throw crystal blocks
  • Enter: Start game or pause the subterranean adventure
